No-Gi Submission Grappling
Same jiu jitsu. Nothing to hold on to. Everything happens faster.
- Level
- 4 stripe white belt and above
- Wear
- Rash guard and shorts
- Taught by
- Deddy Wigraha
- Pace
- The fastest class we run
In the gi, the jacket gives you handles. You can grip a collar, a sleeve, a lapel. You can slow someone down and hold them in place while you think.
Take it away and none of that exists. Sweat makes everything slip. Positions that felt locked now leak. Your opponent escapes things they would never escape in a gi, and you have half the time to react.
What is left is the part of jiu jitsu that was never about the uniform. Body position, angle, pressure and timing. No-gi strips the art down to those four things and makes you get good at them, because there is nothing else to hide behind.
You need four stripes to train here
- Requirement
- A four stripe white belt or above. This one is enforced, so please check before making the trip.
- Why
- No-gi moves fast and the margin for error is small. The grips that let a beginner slow a round down are not there.
- Not there yet
- Start in the gi. The fastest route into this room runs straight through Fundamentals, and the no-gi mat is not going anywhere.
- What to wear
- A fitted rash guard and shorts with no zips or pockets. No loose t-shirts.
Taught by Deddy
Deddy Wigraha leads these sessions himself.
He brought Brazilian jiu jitsu to Indonesia in 1998, holds his black belt from Romero “Jacaré” Cavalcanti of Alliance, and trains combatives with Indonesian military and police units. That work is entirely no-gi, because nobody in a real situation is wearing a jacket you can grab.
That experience shows up in what gets taught here, and in how precisely it gets taught.
What a session covers
Technique breakdowns
Positions taken apart in detail. The exact grip, the exact angle, and why it fails when it fails. No-gi rewards precision more than the gi does, because there is no jacket to cover a sloppy detail.
Wrestling and takedowns
Getting the fight to the ground without a collar or sleeve to control. Underhooks, head position and level changes.
Guard without grips
Playing and passing guard when your hands slide off everything. Frames, connection points, and knowing when to hold and when to move.
Leg locks and modern attacks
The submission game that has grown fastest in no-gi over the last decade, taught with the mechanics explained and the safety rules made clear.
Live rounds
Hard, fast and continuous. This is the sweatiest class we run and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
No-gi rewards precision more than the gi does, because there is no jacket to cover a sloppy detail.
Questions we get asked
Is this an MMA class?
Should I train gi and no-gi, or pick one?
